Mount Maunganui Must Dos

The Mount

Oceanside Resort & Twin Towers sits at the foot of iconic Mount Maunganui, an extinct volcano that was historically a pa (a traditional Maori village/defensive settlement) but is now home to native birds, bush, grasslands and grazing sheep. You will also find visitors and locals alike walking the tracks around the base of the mount as well as scaling the slopes to the summit.

Be sure to climb to the peak, approximately 232 meters, for spectacular views along sandy beaches and rocky bays, towards surrounding islands and out across Tauranga and the busy port. The hike to the top of the mount takes around 1 ½ hours depending on the track chosen and fitness levels (average or above). For a gentler walk the base track is approximately 3km long and takes around 45 minutes to complete.

Hot Saltwater Pools

The Mount Hot Pools are a one-of-a-kind attraction and the perfect way to soak weary muscles after a hike to the top of Mount Maunagnui! Discover the healing and rejuvenating properties of warmed sea water as you soak in one of the many pools on offer - tepid lap pool, hot passive pool, aqua jet spa pools and private pools all warmed to a comfortable 39 degrees Celsius. The active pool and children's pool are heated to a moderate 32 degrees. Release muscle tension with the pools massage jets, or book a therapy massage with the specialist on-site team. You can even take part in an aqua aerobics class for some invigorating exercise.

Maunganui Beaches

Mount Maunganui is a beach lover’s paradise with one of the most well-known and visited beaches in the Bay of Plenty. From the Main Beach at the base of Mount Maunganui (and directly opposite Oceanside Resort & Twin Towers) stretching down to Papamoa Reserve there are acres of soft sand and open water to satisfy every visitor. Despite the summer influx of visitors to Mount Maunganui the vast beach accommodates everyone.

Excellent surfing attracts long time enthusiasts as well as those wanting to learn. Several board hire and surfing schools can be found along the beach for those who want to hit the waves. As well as surfing there are kite surfing, kayaking and paddle board activities available.

For those who enjoy a more relaxed pace of beach activity there are opportunities for snorkelling, swimming, exploring rock pools, fishing and sunbathing. There are also a host of beachside festivals, markets, sports events and concerts held in Mount Maunganui.

Moturiki Island

Once the site of an aquarium the former ‘Leisure Island’ is now returning to its natural bush state attracting native birdlife, hikers exploring tracks and keen fishermen looking for a winning vantage point to the water. Access to the island can be made via a manmade walkway that is exposed during low tide and tracks on the island are suitable for most fitness levels.
